DESK

Phineas Banning’s office was a quiet place to conduct his many businesses.

In addition to managing the ranch and farm activities on the Banning homestead, his main business was stagecoach transportation and freighting.

He also had a coal and lumber yard and a blacksmith shop. He was continually working to secure funds to build a breakwater for the Los Angeles Harbor and for a railroad connection between Los Angeles and San Pedro.

This Eastlake style cylinder top desk is a Banning family piece, circa 1880.

GASOLIER

When first introduced, chandeliers held candles or oil lamps that were pulled down by a pulley so they could be lit or blown out as needed.

When gas became available, the chandeliers were changed out to accommodate gasoliers. The fixtures pictured here were never pulled down, and when they were installed, they were set in place along with a flexible gas line “tube” that provided the gas.

At night, the gas line to each lamp was turned on and lit by a long slender candle or taper flame and then the gas line was turned off to extinguish each light when everyone in the household went to bed.

COPY PRESS

This office was well equipped for the time period with this copy press, also known as book press or letter press.

This manual press created a copy of an original ink-written document by using a solvent to press some of the ink onto a clean paper, which made a mirror (backwards) copy.
This first copy was then brushed with more solvent and pressed with another clean paper, which created a mirror of the mirror, an exact copy of the original.

A cumbersome process indeed, especially when compared to the push button copy machines used today.

PARLOR FURNITURE

This elegant suite of matching furniture is in the Rococo Revival style, popular from the 1840s to the 1860s. Richly carved, it is a fine example of the achievements of the Industrial Revolution when machine-made furniture could be made to look like handmade.

This Double Parlor Suite is attributed to the Joseph Meeks style of furniture production.

His furniture was produced by laminating several thin layers of wood which were then bent using steam, making for a stronger surface to handle the pierce carvings.

admired by young women in the late 19th Century. The chaise lounge, shadow boxes on the mantel, the crazy quilt and scrap screen are typical examples of Victorian taste. Lucy and Mary Banning would have enjoyed an active childhood similar to their brothers until adolescence when they would be expected to learn skills of a future wife and mother including sewing, cooking and household management. panorama_3B4383AB_37B5_1BC0_41C4_0393F3D19632.subtitle = A tough competitor and formidable opponent in business, Phineas Banning was a devoted husband and father whose home was his sanctuary. Mr. Banning shared this Master Bedroom with Rebecca Banning with whom he had nine children, only three of which survived, William, Joseph Brent and Hancock. Two years after Rebecca’s death, Phineas Banning wed Mary Hollister. They had three daughters, two of whom survived: Mary and Lucy. This room represents the best comfort available to affluent people of the time, though it may seem austere to modern families. panorama_3B43BF97_37B5_0BC0_41BA_6F1609913613.subtitle = The Banning Residence was filled with infants and children of various ages who moved to different rooms as they grew older. In the Nursery, infants and the very young children played and slept under the watchful eye of a nurse (nanny). The dolls, tea sets, books, hooked rug and bright quilt are typical of the period. panorama_3B446B4F_37B5_0B40_419B_A3771B4F0054.subtitle = Two years after his first wife, Rebecca’s death, Phineas Banning married 22-year old Mary Hollister, the cultured and well-educated daughter of a wealthy sheep and cattle rancher from Santa Barbara. Mary’s responsibilities would have been many: to supervise the running of the house; to see to the physical and educational needs of the children; and to entertain her husband’s many friends and business associates and their wives. It was not uncommon for a well-to-do lady such as Mary to have a private parlor, or sitting room, for her exclusive use, where she could write letters, do the household accounts or just retreat for an hour from the hubbub of a house filled with servants and growing children. panorama_3B44E6BC_37B5_7DC0_41C9_CB3EFE491F71.subtitle = The Boys Room has been restored as it would have appeared when the Banning boys were teenagers. William, Joseph Brent and Hancock were active, athletic boys who participated in the family’s sports and business interests to the fullest. Fishing rods, antler decorations, and the picture of a hunting dog indicate outdoor activities the boys enjoyed. panorama_63FDEBE3_6F8E_6E4F_41D4_45F7C1CAEF38.subtitle = When the main house was first built, this small building was used as a milk house to keep dairy and milk products cool. Later, when Mr. Banning’s youngest son, Hancock, and his family lived in the main house, it was used as an office. Today it is interpreted as a late 19th century one-room schoolhouse complete with McGuffey Readers and antique desks. panorama_64925737_7161_C17F_4199_DD046A6A6BCB.subtitle = The Stagecoach Barn is only one of three to remain on what was once the Banning Ranch. It houses a number of fine old horse-drawn vehicles, some donated by Mrs. Hancock Banning. Staging was a way of life to Phineas Banning; in addition to driving coaches with formidable speed, he modified their design to meet his special needs and those of travelers to whom he sometimes sold the vehicles. panorama_AC2906D9_A72A_4415_41C9_F331C8F2CF42.subtitle = Across the Entrance Hall from General Banning’s Office is the formal Parlor where he entertained business associates, pioneers and politicians. panorama_AC293EF0_A72A_4413_41E2_EEAF49484730.subtitle = The Kitchen was originally an out-building, as was customary in Eastern homes during the first half of the nineteenth century. Mary Banning had this kitchen built to be close to the Dining Room to ensure warm food for dinner. Victorians had a passion for gadgetry including apple peelers, cabbage graters, bean slicers and molds to make a woman’s life easier. panorama_ADC82ADC_A717_CC13_41E4_81CFF8709CB3.subtitle = In the Dining Room, Phineas Banning acted as family head and as host to friends and business associates for over twenty years. The room is decorated in the period of the 1870’s and 80s. It is a fine formal example of late-nineteenth-century decorative arts, reflecting the changing times. panorama_ADC85C67_A717_C43D_41D2_363AEE49042A.subtitle = After entering the hall on the southwest side of the house, you will find Phineas Banning’s Office. For the thirty-four years he lived and worked in California, his business affairs encompassed a tremendous variety of interests related mainly to transportation and communication in the Los Angeles area. panorama_ADC8EE60_A716_4433_41C4_872F821D0850.subtitle = The Family Living Room was actually two guest rooms in Phineas Banning’s time. As years passed and styles changed, the Banning sons turned the divided area into one room where the whole family might gather. In contrast to the formality of the Parlor where visitors were entertained, the Family Living Room was a cozy, informal place where parents and children could relax and entertain themselves with popular Victorian parlor games, music, conversation and reading. ### Title album_25AD9587_00FF_D363_4189_EC49DD536DFC.label = Photo Album - Banning Museum
